Concept 01 of 42 · Superconductivity and Josephson Physics

BCS superconductivity

Electrons form correlated Cooper pairs below a critical temperature.

$$\Delta(T)\neq0$$

Physical intuition

Electrons form correlated Cooper pairs below a critical temperature. This is the starting point for understanding how superconducting circuit parameters determine quantum energy levels and dynamics.

Deep dive: how the mechanism works

Attractive effective interactions near the Fermi surface favor paired fermions; phase coherence produces a macroscopic superconducting state.

How the quantum phenomenon appears

Aluminium thin films form low-loss microwave circuit wiring at millikelvin temperatures. To establish the predicted quantum behavior, connect the circuit Hamiltonian to a measured transition, coherence experiment, gate benchmark or calibrated readout signal.

Assumptions and limitations

The elementary BCS model does not describe every superconductor or every source of microwave loss.

Research and simulation exercise

Identify the tunable parameters, predict the observable from the stated model, and sweep one parameter while holding the others fixed. Compare against a simpler reference model, quantify loss and uncertainty, and state which observations would falsify the hypothesis.
