Concept 34 of 42 · Quantum Measurement and Parametric Devices

Two-mode squeezing circuits

Three- or four-wave mixing can generate correlated microwave photon pairs.

01 / Mathematical framework
$$H_{\mathrm{int}}/\hbar=i\lambda(a^\dagger b^\dagger-ab)$$

Physical intuition

Three- or four-wave mixing can generate correlated microwave photon pairs. This is the starting point for understanding how superconducting circuit parameters determine quantum energy levels and dynamics.

Deep dive: how the mechanism works

Parametric pumping creates pair excitations and reduces fluctuations of selected joint quadratures.

How the quantum phenomenon appears

Flux-pumped superconducting mixers produce microwave entanglement. To establish the predicted quantum behavior, connect the circuit Hamiltonian to a measured transition, coherence experiment, gate benchmark or calibrated readout signal.

Assumptions and limitations

Loss and thermal occupancy degrade observable squeezing and entanglement.

Research and simulation exercise

Identify the tunable parameters, predict the observable from the stated model, and sweep one parameter while holding the others fixed. Compare against a simpler reference model, quantify loss and uncertainty, and state which observations would falsify the hypothesis.
