Physical meaning

Superconducting circuits engineer quantized electrical degrees of freedom using capacitors, inductors and Josephson junctions. The Josephson nonlinearity allows an otherwise harmonic oscillator to function as an addressable qubit.

Mathematical framework

For a transmon, an approximate Hamiltonian is H=4E_C(n−n_g)²−E_J cosφ. The ratio E_J/E_C balances charge-noise sensitivity and anharmonicity. Transmons are weakly anharmonic, so strong drives can leak population into higher levels.

From theory to technology

Microwave pulses implement gates, resonators mediate coupling and dispersive readout maps qubit states to measurable microwave responses. Cryogenic operation suppresses thermal excitations but does not eliminate noise or materials defects.

Limits and experimental realities

Relaxation time T₁ measures energy decay, while T₂ describes loss of phase coherence. In simple models 1/T₂=1/(2T₁)+1/Tφ. Device engineering must consider dielectric loss, quasiparticles, flux noise, crosstalk and calibration.

Worked thought experiment

For a resonantly driven qubit, a pulse area θ=Ωt generates a rotation. A π pulse ideally flips |0⟩ to |1⟩; a π/2 pulse creates an equal superposition, subject to phase and calibration.
