Concept 14 of 42 · Quantum Light and Emitters

Jaynes–Cummings interaction

A two-level emitter coherently exchanges excitations with one quantized cavity mode.

$$H/\hbar=\omega_ca^\dagger a+\frac{{\omega_e}}{{2}}\sigma_z+g(a^\dagger\sigma_-+a\sigma_+)$$

Physical intuition

A two-level emitter coherently exchanges excitations with one quantized cavity mode. This is the starting point for understanding how nanoscale optical geometry changes the states or dynamics accessible to light and matter.

Deep dive: how the mechanism works

Under the rotating-wave approximation, the coupling term swaps one cavity photon for one emitter excitation.

How the quantum phenomenon appears

Vacuum Rabi oscillations can appear when coherent coupling beats losses. To distinguish a genuinely quantum signal from a classical optical response, connect the device physics to a measurement such as photon correlations, interference visibility, energy-level structure or quantum-state tomography where appropriate.

Assumptions and limitations

The approximation fails in ultrastrong coupling or for strongly multimode systems.

Research and simulation exercise

Identify the tunable parameters, predict the observable from the stated model, and sweep one parameter while holding the others fixed. Compare against a simpler reference model, quantify loss and uncertainty, and state which observations would falsify the hypothesis.
